Autor Andrew Lang Editat de Indy Publications
en Limba Engleză Hardback – feb 2002
A Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. Lang is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St Andrews are named after him. "The irony of Lang's life and work is that although he wrote for a profession-literary criticism; fiction; poems; books and articles on anthropology, mythology, history, and travel ... he is best recognized for the works he did not write." -- Anita Silvey, Children's Books and Their Creators Oh, that we all could become prosperous and famous for things we did not have to write And still, the collecting of these tales is quite a deed. They're wonderful stuff -- many of them went on to become famous. And they're all wonderful reading Many of them, in fact, are famously good. Included in this volume are "The Bronze Ring," "Prince Hyacinth and the Dear Little Princess," "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," "The Yellow Dwarf," "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood," "Cinderella, or the Little Glass Slipper," "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp," "The Tale of a Youth Who Set Out to Learn What Fear Was," "Rumpelstiltzkin," "Beauty and the Beast," "The Master-Maid," "Why the Sea Is Salt," "The Master Cat," "Felicia and the Pot of Pinks," "The White Cat," "The Water-Lily," "The Terrible Head," "The Story of Pretty Goldilocks," "The History of Whittington," "The Wonderful Sheep," "Little Thumb," "The Forty Thieves," "Hansel and Grettel," "Snow-White and Rose-Red," "The Goose-Girl," "Toads and Diamonds," "Prince Darling," "Blue Beard," "Trusty John," "The Brave Little Tailor," "A Voyage to Lilliput," "The Princess on the Glass Hill," "The Story of Prince Ahmed and the Fairy Paribanou," "The History of Jack the Giant-Killer," "The Black Bull of Norroway," and "The Red Etin."

Notă biografică

Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St Andrews are named after him. Lang is now chiefly known for his publications on folklore, mythology and religion. The interest in folklore was from early life; he read John Ferguson McLennan before coming to Oxford, and then was influenced by E. B. Tylor. The earliest of his publications is Custom and Myth (1884). In Myth, Ritual and Religion (1887) he explained the "irrational" elements of mythology as survivals from more primitive forms. Lang's Making of Religion was heavily influenced by the 18th century idea of the "noble savage": in it, he maintained the existence of high spiritual ideas among so-called "savage" races, drawing parallels with the contemporary interest in occult phenomena in England. His Blue Fairy Book (1889) was a beautifully produced and illustrated edition of fairy tales that has become a classic. This was followed by many other collections of fairy tales, collectively known as Andrew Lang's Fairy Books. In the preface of the Lilac Fairy Book he credits his wife with translating and transcribing most of the stories in the collections. Lang examined the origins of totemism in Social Origins (1903).
