Recenzii
'This is a very interesting book that will be of use to scholars in various disciplines. It has been handsomely produced with the inclusion of 13 plates of some of the images discussed by the author... Anne Simon’s work can be recommended as an excellent means of gaining insights into many aspects of lived religiosity in one of the most prominent cities of late-medieval Germany.' Reviews in History 'Anne Simon’s book is a case study in how texts and images depicting a saint can be mapped onto the structure of a city to demonstrate the rich levels of resonance and meaning within devotional practices.' Descriere
Saint Katherine of Alexandria was - after the Virgin Mary - arguably the most important female religious figure within medieval Europe. Despite this, many gaps in our knowledge remain as regards the significance and function of her cult within Germany. Simon's book addresses this lacunae, using Nuremberg as a case study to examine the ways in which the cult expressed itself - in literature, art; devotional practice, Patrician patronage, political strategy, urban space - and how the various forms of expression interacted to shape Patrician and civic identity.
