The Environment Between Theory and Practice

Autor Avner De-Shalit
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 8 mar 2000
Why is there a gap between the questions that environmental philosophers discuss and the issues that motivate environmental activists? The author attempts to bridge this gap by combining tools of political philosophy with questions of environmental ethics and politics. He defends a radical position in relations to environmental protection and social policies in order to put forward a political theory, which is not only philosophically sound, but also relevant to the practice of environmental activism. He argues that attempts to find 'independent' values in nature can be at odds with the contemporary political debates surrounding environmental politics. In the second half of the book, the author examines the environmental scope of several key political ideologies: liberalism, communitarianism, participatory democracy, and socialism.

Recenzii

de-Shalit's ideas are sure to generate discussion on the practical necessities of applying the theory environmental philosophers produce, on sharpening our use of concepts, and on understanding the political requirements of the philosophical ideas that make up the backdrop of the environmental movement. Largely because of its ability to provoke this type of discussion, but also because of its timely consideration of how environmental philosophy and environmental politics and policy can and ought to be bridged, I recommend this book for use not only by environmental and political theorists, environmental activists, but also for use in lower and upper level university courses in environmental studies, environmental ethics, environmental policy and environmenal politics.
The Environment Between Theory and Practice is a work that philosophers, political scientists, sociologists, and environmentalists will find challenging, refreshing, and useful.
What is unique about de-Shalit's project is the way he frames his discussion and the new ideas he advances, ideas that have the potential to contribute to a politically refocused anthropocentric environmental philosophy ... a valuable addition to approaches that try to put some of the 'applied' back in the applied area that is environmental philosophy.
The inimitably accessible style with which this is put together, and the fact that it comes from one of the major figures in world environmental theory today, makes it one of this year's must-reads.
