Defoe, born Daniel Foe, (1660-1731) was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy. He was a prolific and versatile writer, producing more than 300 works including books, pamphlets and journals on topics as diverse as politics, crime, religion, psychology and the supernatural, but is most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe (1719) which is second only to the Bible in its number of translations. This sequel to its significantly more popular predecessor was also first published in 1719 and it is speculated that it is partially based on Moscow embassy secretary Adam Brand's journal detailing the embassy's journey from Moscow to Peking from 1693-95.

Daniel Defoe (1660 - 1731), born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is noted for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularize the form in Britain with others such as Samuel Richardson and is among the founders of the English novel. He was a prolific and versatile writer, producing more than five hundred books, pamphlets, and journals on various topics, including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural. He was also a pioneer of economic journalism.
