The History of the University of Oxford: Volume V: The Eighteenth Century: History of the University of Oxford

Editat de L. S. Sutherland, L. G. Mitchell T H Aston
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 30 iul 1986
Volume V shows a contrasting picture of eighteenth-century Oxford to that presented by Edward Gibbon in his Autobiography. A more balanced assessment has been long overdue. From detailed studies it is now possible to show that in most subjects Oxford had a reputation that was far from contemptible, and one that attracted foreign scholars in some numbers. Academic responsibilities were taken seriously and reforming minds were at work. Attention is given to the University's role in national politics, its social and administrative structure, and its relationship with the Church, as well as the full range of academic life and culture in eighteenth-century Oxford. Recenzii

'The History of the University of Oxford is a remarkable achievement. It virtually creates the subject; and it brings it at once to near-perfection ... Nothing like it has happened in any comparable field of social history in modern times.' History Today
'compellingly readable from start to finish. It is also an immense achievement, just as the series to which it belongs is a splendid conception, and one which shames Cambridge where a similar project was mooted in vain.' Boyd Hilton (Trinity College, Cambridge) Oxford Magazine
`This encyclopedic compilation is throughout an exemplar of the highest standards of scholarship: its comprehensive coverage of the eighteenth century will provide a most valuable source for historians of politics, scholarship, life and manners of the period.' David Phillips, Oxford Review of Education
