The Housing Lark

Autor Sam Selvon
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 dec 1899
The humorous yet poignant novel of West Indian migrant life in London that adds an iconic voice to the growing Caribbean canonA Penguin Classic Set in London in the 1960's, when the UK encouraged its Commonwealth citizens to emigrate as a result of the post-war labor shortage, The Housing Lark explores the Caribbean migrant experience in the Mother Country by following a group of friends as they attempt to buy a home together. Despite encountering a racist and predatory rental market, the friends scheme, often comically, to find a literal and figurative place of their own. Will these motley folks, male and female, Black and Indian, from Trinidad and Jamaica, dreamers, hustlers, and artists, be able to achieve this milestone of upward mobility? Unique and wonderful, comic and serious, cynical and tenderhearted, The Housing Lark poses the question of whether their lark, or quixotic idea of finding a home, can ever become a reality. Kittitian-British novelist and playwright Caryl Phillips contributes a foreword, while postcolonial literature scholar Dohra Ahmad provides a contextual introduction.

Recenzii

A unique and wonderful novel, comic and serious, cynical and tender-hearted ... With its surprisingly happy ending and irreverent, spirited wit,The Housing Larkgoes against the grain of much postcolonial literature ... Funny, serious, innovative, multilingual, musical,The Housing Larkshows how literary expression can create community across race, gender, place, and time
Selvon's meticulously observed narratives of displaced Londoners' lives created a template for how to write about migrant, and postmigrant, London for countless writers who have followed in his wake, including Hanif Kureishi and Zadie Smith ...The Housing Larkis a a fine, and unfairly neglected, companion novel toThe Lonely Londoners
A vibrant comic classic ... perfectly observed
The Housing Larkis both spry and strikingly resonant ... Ultimately, as much as its lovable characters and its caper-strewn quest, what makesThe Housing Larkso special are the music and melodies of Selvon's prose.
Sam Selvon is known forThe Lonely Londoners. But it isThe Housing Larkin which his brilliance truly shines.
Funny, subversive and lyrical ... Selvon's garrulous comically-gifted narrator feels like a friend, spinning surreal yet familiar tales in a late-night drinking den. Yet his stories have a sharp edge. The dark side of the Windrush experience lurks between the laughs and this deeply enjoyable book hides serious literary intent.
