The Korean War: An Annotated Bibliography: Bibliographies and Indexes in Military Studies

Autor Paul M. Edwards
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 25 ian 1998 – vârsta până la 17 ani
Caught between the popular and passionate World War II and the divisive Vietnam War, the Korean War has been neglected by scholars and society. Yet it is one of the significant events of the 20th century, and scholarship on the war is increasing. This annotated bibliography covers the war from the early division of Korea in 1946-1948, the North Korean invasion, American and United Nations' involvement, and the Chinese entry, through the American withdrawals, the development of static lines, the armistice talks, POW exchanges, and post-armistice difficulties. The volume opens with a brief overview of the official war and a guide to archival sources and collected documents. It then includes chapters on the causes and conflicts, histories, military operations, special topics, and response to the war, and concludes with analysis and historiography.

Raising the military forces to carry out the dictates of both the U.S. government and the United Nations, often by recalling soldiers who had only recently been mustered out of World War II service.

Recenzii

Today, 50-plus years after the conflict, the experience of being a soldier during the Korean War is generally unknown. Edwards presents a concise text for students and general readers offering an overview of the daily routines of soldiers during The Forgotten War. Coverage includes background information on the outbreak of the war and physical and cultural aspects of Korea; phases and campaigns; the process of raising a military force for the war; learning to be a soldier and to fight with WWII weapons; life on the front; care of the wounded and dead; life behind the line; soldiers' attitudes about enemies and allies; media, morale, and myths; religion, relaxation, and entertainment; returning home; and how the war is remembered by veterans. The text also includes a timeline and an extensive bibliography.
[A] well researched volume that should be of great use to those interested in the evolution of the nation's organized militia after the Civil War.
