The NYPD Tapes: A Shocking Story of Cops, Cover-Ups, and Courage

Autor Graham A. Rayman
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 6 oct 2014
In May 2010, NYPD officer Adrian Schoolcraft made national headlines when he released a series of secretly recorded audio tapes exposing corruption and abuse at the highest levels of the police department. But, according to a lawsuit filed by Schoolcraft against the City of New York, instead of admitting mistakes and pledging reform Schoolcraft's superiors forced him into a mental hospital in an effort to discredit the evidence. In "The NYPD Tapes ," the reporter who first broke the Schoolcraft story brings his ongoing saga up to date, revealing the rampant abuses that continue in the NYPD today, including warrantless surveillance, systemic harassment, and underreporting of serious crimes like rape and murder. Through this lens, he tells the broader tale of how American law enforcement has for the past 30 years been distorted by a ruthless quest for numbers, in the form of CompStat, the vaunted data-driven accountability system first championed by New York police chief William Bratton and since implemented in police departments across the country. Forced to produce certain crime stats each quarter or face discipline, cops everywhere fudged the numbers, robbing actual crime victims of justice and sweeping countless innocents into the police net. Rayman paints a terrifying picture of a system gone wild, and the pitiless fate of the whistleblower who tried to stop it.

Caracteristici

Graham Rayman was the first to receive these tapes directly from Adrian Schoolcraft, the whistle-blowing officer who created them. His subsequent interviews with Schoolcraft led to an award-wining five-part series for the Village Voice, which in turn led to several investigations, the transfer of two precinct commanders and a chief, and started a debate in major cities across the country about CompStat, NYPD policies and their effect on citizens. The series has been nominated by the Voice and by several criminologists for a Pulitzer Prize
Since allegations first surfaced in 2010, the story has been followed closely by the New York Times, the Daily News, the Post and others. The cast of characters include current and former police commissioners Ray Kelly and Bill Bratton, mayoral advisor Howard Wolfson, John Timoney and many more
The NYPD has been taking heat lately, from the controversial so-called "stop-and-frisk" program to the recent admission that it conducts surveillance on certain Muslim groups regardless of whether any criminal activity is suspected. These stories have whetted the public appetite to know what really goes on between station walls
Graham Rayman has covered the NYPD for 17 years, including such high-profile stories as Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo and the response at Ground Zero. Given his unmatched access in this case, he is the perfect person to tell the whole story
The challenges to CompStat exposed here will rock police departments across the country, many of which are now as dependent on the system as the NYPD
