The Oxford Handbook of Science and Medicine in the Classical World: Oxford Handbooks
Editat de Paul Keyser, John Scarboroughen Limba Engleză Paperback – 26 apr 2022
With a focus on science in the ancient societies of Greece and Rome, including glimpses into Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China, The Oxford Handbook of Science and Medicine in the Classical World offers an in depth synthesis of science and medicine circa 650 BCE to 650 CE. The Handbook comprises five sections, each with a specific focus on ancient science and medicine. The second section covers the early Greek era, up through Plato and the mid-fourth century bce.
The third section covers the long Hellenistic era, from Aristotle through the end of the Roman Republic, acknowledging that the political shift does not mark a sharp intellectual break. The fourth section covers the Roman era from the late Republic through the transition to Late Antiquity. The finalsection covers the era of Late Antiquity, including the early Byzantine centuries.
The Handbook provides through each of its approximately four dozen essays, a synthesis and synopsis of the concepts and models of the various ancient natural sciences, covering the early Greek era through the fall of theRoman Republic, including essays that explore topics such as music theory, ancient philosophers, astrology, and alchemy. The Oxford Handbook of Science and Medicine in the Classical World guides the reader to further exploration of the concepts and models of the ancient sciences, how they evolved and changed over time, and how they relate to one another and to their antecedents. There are a total of four dozen or so topical essays in the five sections, each of which takes as its focus the primary texts, explaining what is now known as well as indicating what future generations of scholars may come toknow.
Contributors suggest the ranges of scholarly disagreements and have been free to advocate their own positions. Readers are led into further literature (both primary and secondary) through the comprehensive and extensive bibliographies provided with each chapter.

... this is a fascinating and absorbing volume that will expose them to aspects of the ancient world still too little considered by many in the field.
This book is a fantastic resource and a major achievement.
This book is a fantastic resource and a major achievement.... The title suggest a broad scope—science and medicine in the classical world—but we get considerably moreâ. A fascinating and absorbing volume.
Among other studies of ancient science, the Handbook stands out above all for the wide diversity of topics it covers...On the whole, The Oxford Handbook of Science and Medicine in the Classical World is probably the most up-to-date and comprehensive guide to ancient science and medicine available today, and there is every reason to believe that it will remain an irreplaceable reference for everyone interested in the subject for decades to come.
The editors have done an excellent job producing as cohesive a volume as this which can be read in its entirety or dipped into as required.
[a] most instructive compilation. What is especially impressive is the way in which the individual essays taken together carefully build up a coherent picture of change over so many areas of human endeavour over a thousand years, while at the same time closely engaging with the specifics of each era. Congratulations are in order.
This book is a masterpiece in its own right. Few books cover these topics in such a holistic manner, capturing the totality and variety of science throughout history. The science of the ancient world is both well-known and unknown. This book compensates for that gap in information by providing a substantial amount of data from qualified experts. As with any book with this many handprints on it, the quality of each section may differ, but the result as a whole is an indispensable resource that should be included in all libraries.
