The Scottish Chiefs

Autor Jane Porter
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 iul 2013
This is a well-researched historical novel about Sir William Wallace of Scotland, also known as Braveheart-a nickname given to this great leader by the soldiers that followed him into battle. This richly detailed history of Sir Wallace's heroic fight for Scottish independence begins in Scotland in the summer of 1296. Set against the rugged beauty of the Scottish countryside, told in elegant prose, this book is hard to put down. The author has "spared no pains in consulting almost every writing extant which treats of the sister kingdoms during the period of my narrative. It would be tedious to swell this page with a list of these authorities; but all who are intimate with our old British historians must perceive, on reading the Scottish Chiefs, that in the sketch which history would have laid down for the biography of my principal hero, I have made no addition, excepting where time having made some erasure, a stroke was necessary to fill the space and unite the outline."

Textul de pe ultima copertă

Rooted in political controversy, gender warfare, violence, and revolution, Jane Porter's The Scottish Chiefs is the epic story of William Wallace's struggle for Scottish independence from English rule. After the cruel death of his wife at the hands of the English, Wallace embarks on a patriotic crusade to free Scotland, gathering around himself loyal followers of both sexes, drawn from across Scottish society. Using the cross-dressing motifs of romance, Porter demonstrates that women have a crucial role to play in the drama of national identity, either as temptresses or national heroines. The Scottish Chiefs is a landmark in the development of the historical novel, and explores vital questions of patriotism, civic duty, heroism, and the role of women.

This Broadview edition offers a critical introduction and important historical contexts for the novel in the form of reviews, excerpts from Porter's prefaces, and other contemporary accounts of William Wallace.
