The Tatler: Cambridge Library Collection - Literary Studies

Autor Richard -. Steele
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 28 ian 2015
The appearance of the first issue of The Tatler in 1709 is usually regarded as the beginning of periodical publication in England. Its founder, Richard Steele (1672–1729), intended 'a paper, which should observe upon the manners of the pleasurable, as well as the busy part of mankind … by way of a letter of intelligence, consisting of such parts as might gratify the curiosity of persons of all conditions, and of each sex'. The 'datelines' of the reports, on news, literature, and plain gossip, were from the most famous coffee houses of early Georgian London, and the contributors included Jonathan Swift and Joseph Addison. The magazine was published for only two years, from April 1709 to January 1711: shortly afterwards, Steele and Addison co-founded The Spectator. This four-volume edition was issued in 1797 by a consortium of publishers, including John Nichols. Volume 4 contains numbers 190 to 271.

Recenzii

'These are wonderful books, beautifully produced by OUP ... and a continuous source of delight and instruction, both from Addison and Steele themselves, and from Bond's meticulous and enlightening commentary.' Country Life
`Donald F. Bond's new edition of the Tatler is a work of historical and editorial scholarship outmatched only by his earlier and even larger edition of the Spectator' Claude Rawson, English Literature
'Such is the variety of topics broached in The Tatler that the general reader as well as the scholar will derive pleasure from this edition. All will be grateful to the late Professor Bond for his long labours as an editor. Thanks are also due to the Clarendon Press for the format and the handsome layout of the text. This is a worthy companion to The Spectator.'Irene Simon, Justificatif.
