This sequel to the equally famous The Rainbow was regarded as a modernist and breakthrough novel or as a sordid and revolting tale of sexual and philosophical depravity, an answer to the cultural crisis that would end up leading to the First World War, as a scandal waiting to be born upon it's release. Nowadays it is considered to be a landmark in the art and evolution of D. H. Lawrence and one of the most interesting novels published in it's time.
