Aaron's Rod: The Cambridge Edition of the Works of D. H. Lawrence

Autor D. H. Lawrence Editat de Mara Kalnins
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 25 mai 1988
Lawrence called Aaron's Rod 'the last of my serious English novels - the end of The Rainbow, Women in Love line.' Written in the years following the First World War, Aaron's Rod questions many of the accepted social and political institutions of Lawrence's own generation and raises issues still important in our time. Aaron's Rod, completed in 1921,was censored by both Lawrence's American and English publishers. The Cambridge Edition of the novel, based on the only authoritative surviving typescript, restores these cut passages and eliminates the errors and house-styling of previous editions. The volume contains an introduction setting out the genesis of the novel, its transmission, publishing history and reception, as well as explanatory notes and a textual apparatus. The appendix contains some early cancelled passages from the novel, here published for the first time, which reveal the kinds of conceptual and stylistic changes that often occurred in Lawrence's revisions.

Notă biografică

D.H. Lawrence, or David Herbert Lawrence, was an English author of novels, short tales, poems, plays, essays, travel guides, and letters. He was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England, on September 11, 1885, and passed away in Vence, France, on March 2, 1930. He became one of the most important English authors of the 20th century because of his novels Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), and Women in Love (1920). Lawrence never again resided in England after the First World War. He and his wife left for Italy in 1919. Soon after, he started writing a series of books that included The Lost Girl (1920), and Aaron's Rod (1922). All three books are divided into two sections, with the tribal ritual of mate-finding taking center stage in the first and the central character venturing to Europe in the second. All three books have open-ended conclusions, but in Mr. Noon, Lawrence delivers his protagonist Lawrence's firsthand account of his time in Germany in 1912 with Frieda, carrying on the lighthearted theme he introduced in Sons and Lovers. Lawrence made the decision to leave Europe in 1921 and travel to the US, Australia, and Sri Lanka.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

Abandoning his wife and children, Aaron Sisson leaves the mining community in pursuit of the 'life single': individual freedom, personal friendship, the 'male power' of passion and art. Playing the flute to pay his way he travels to post-war London, where he mixes with the modern Bohemian set and finds male friendship in Rawdon Lilly. Further travels take him to Milan and Florence ('a town of men') preoccupied with thoughts on the decline of humanity from the Renaissance to the modern age. For Aaron, in his own way, is striving to save civilization. Aaron's Rod was completed in 1921 but was then censored by Lawrence's publishers. This edition of the novel, based on the only authoritative surviving typescript, restores these cut passages and eliminates the errors of previous editions.
