John O’Hara (1905–1970) was one of the most prominent American writers of the twentieth century. Championed by Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Dorothy Parker, he wrote fourteen novels; his first, Appointment in Samarra, received instant acclaim and launched him to prominence at the age of twenty-nine. O’Hara had more stories published in the New Yorker than anyone in the history of the magazine.
Lorin Stein is the editor of the Paris Review and has written for the New York Review of Books, Harper’s, the New Republic, and the London Review of Books. He lives in New York City.
