This book aims to assist ophthalmologists in providing the best possible care for children with congenital cataracts. The entire patient pathway is covered, from preoperative assessment through application of the various surgical techniques to postoperative care and management of complications. Among the topics discussed are new developments in molecular genetics relevant to patient evaluation, intraocular lens power formulas, and the findings of the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study. The surgical section describes anterior capsulotomy, lensectomy, selection of intraocular lens (IOL) power, IOL implantation in the capsular bag, posterior capsulotomy techniques, the use of secondary IOLs and iris-fixated IOLs in children, and surgical management in developing countries. Visual outcomes after surgery are also fully addressed, with chapters on the occurrence of strabismus, nystagmus, and poor stereopsis.

Notă biografică

Scott R. Lambert, MD, is Professor of Pediatrics and Ophthalmology at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA. Since 1988 he has been Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Emory Eye Clinic and Chief of Ophthalmology, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Dr. Lambert has been Chairman of the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study since 2004. He is Chairman of the Pediatric Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee (OTAC), American Academy of Ophthalmology, and an Executive Committee member of the Pediatric Eye Diseases Investigator Group (PEDIG). Dr. Lambert is the recipient of a Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Senior Honor Award from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and is the author of 136 peer-reviewed publications.
 
I. Christopher Lloyd, MB BS, FRCS (Eng), FRCOphth, is a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist, at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (a position he has held since 1995) and Honorary Professor of Paediatric Ophthalmology, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, University of Manchester, Manchester, UK. Prior to joining MREH, he was a Clinical Research Fellow in Paediatric Ophthalmology at the Institute of Child Health/Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London.  Dr. Lloyd is a member of the editorial board of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and in 2013 served as an international advisor to the Pediatric Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG). He is a board member of the European Paediatric Ophthalmology Society, Chairman of the Paediatric Sub-Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the author of more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and 8 book chapters, mostly relating to paediatric ophthalmology.
