Recenzii
This title in the Health and Medical Issues Today series continues the tradition of providing compact yet thorough coverage of a timely, contentious topic. Readers will find themselves moving at a galloping pace through the volume, which is written in language accessible to nonspecialists. Independent scholar Kelly offers sections on the scientific background of gene therapy, ethics and regulations, and references and resources. She introduces technical terms so that readers may better understand reports in the news and in research publications. Cautioning that gene therapy is poorly understood, Kelly emphasizes that research in the field advances slowly, and that many people overestimate its potential for miracle cures. She covers milestone experiments; patterns of genetic inheritance of diseases and conditions; and ethical, social, and religious issues related to gene therapy. Regulation of research on human subjects in the US and other countries is addressed in chapters and in a 51-page appendix. The content is very current, with a further reading list that includes items from December 2006. A time line covers 5000 BCE to 2005.. Recommended. All undergraduates, general readers, and professionals/practitioners.
This book addresses the important issue of gene therapy in human disease states..the book gives an excellent background for the structure of DNA, RNA, and genes.
