Nutrition and Bariatric Surgery

Editat de Robert F. Kushner, Christopher D. Still
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 21 aug 2014
Bariatric surgery has led to improved health outcomes including significant weight loss and reduction in co-morbidities among patients with obesity. Clinical practice guidelines recommend that patients considering bariatric surgery undergo a comprehensive nutritional assessment. Nutrition and Bariatric Surgery is the first comprehensive book that uniquely addresses the dietary and nutritional care of the bariatric surgery patient.
This book reviews the nutritional and physiological changes imposed by surgical revision of the gastrointestinal tract. Also discussed are nutritional assessment of the bariatric surgical patient as well as pre- and postoperative dietary management recommendations. Other clinical topics covered include nutritional anemia, metabolic bone disease, neurological disorders, and protein–calorie malnutrition.
Nutrition and Bariatric Surgery examines eating behaviors before and after bariatric surgery as well as psychological issues, mood disorders, and nutritional concerns associated with weight regain. The book also addresses nutritional needs of special populations undergoing bariatric surgery including adolescents, pregnant or lactating women, and severely obese ICU patients. The book is an authoritative guide for health care professionals caring for the bariatric patient including physicians, dietitians, physician assistants, nurses, and nurse practitioners.

Recenzii

"This highly interdisciplinary reference work brings together diverse studies on surface energy fluxes and soil moisture from theoretical background to its applications represented through various case studies. The book offers a breath-taking range of resources from well-established scientists and academicians around the world with their valuable piece of work and opens a new window for scholars with interdisciplinary and methodological resources on latest ongoing researches … a ‘must read’ book for the scholars working in this field."
—Dr. Prashant K. Srivastava, ESSIC/NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland, USA

"… presents an overview of the various methods developed, followed by algorithmic techniques with various case studies cited. Lastly, a look towards future directions and challenges directs the reader as to prospects. It is a nice abridged and condensed volume of the literature in the field, which I hope will entice more professionals in water resources to consider implementation of satellite measurements in water management where practicable."
—Robert R. Gillies, Utah State University

Descriere

While bariatric surgery can lead to positive effects, it can also result in increased risk for nutrient malabsorption, deficiency, and clinical complications. This book addresses the dietary and nutritional care of the bariatric surgery patient. It explores the physiological changes that underlie selective nutrient malabsorption, preoperative nutritional assessment and dietary care of the patient through the surgery process, and nutritional clinical complications manifesting in anemia, neurological disorders, metabolic bone disease, and protein-calorie malnutrition. It also covers special populations, including adolescents and pregnant and lactating patients.
