Stuart Hillis the author of theIcemarkseries of historical fantasy novels and winner of the inaugural Waterstone's Children's Book Prize. Published in 18 languages, Stuart visits many schools to talk about his background, his books and being a writer, as well as enthusing about history and learning. Stuart was born and brought up in Leicester where he lives with his partner and their two cats.

[My daughter] loved the fact that this was a story about a strong female character - someone who learnt to fight as well as her brother and went into battle to protect her country but at the same time you could see this other side of her, the gentler side. I think reading books with characters like this is powerful for young girls - they can see women who are strong but can still be kind and caring.
