Shipboard Propulsion, Power Electronics, and Ocean Energy
Autor Mukund Patelen Limba Engleză Hardback – 17 feb 2012
Comprised of sixteen chapters, the book is divided into four parts:
- Power Electronics and Motor Drives explains basic power electronics converters and variable-frequency drives, cooling methods, and quality of power
- Electric Propulsion Technologies focuses on the electric propulsion of ships using recently developed permanent magnet and superconducting motors, as well as hybrid propulsion using fuel cell, photovoltaic, and wind power
- Renewable Ocean Energy Technologies explores renewable ocean energy from waves, marine currents, and offshore wind farms
- System Integration Aspects discusses two aspects—energy storage and system reliability—that are essential for any large-scale power system
As a textbook, it is ideal for an elective course at marine and naval academies with engineering programs. It is also a valuable reference for commercial and military shipbuilders, port operators, renewable ocean energy developers, classification societies, machinery and equipment manufacturers, researchers, and others interested in modern shipboard power and propulsion systems.

Recenzii
"I think the approach is sound in the development of the materials and the sequence in which they are covered by the book. … the book ties many diverse areas of electrical power system design and operation together nicely. … the material presented is covered in sufficient depth for use by students to better comprehend the unique requirements that go into the design and operation of variable frequency drives in both shipboard power system usage as well as other real world applications. ... an excellent addition to the curriculum for professional mariners. … instrumental to the proper operation of commercial and military seagoing vessels."
—Anthony J. Indelicato, U.S. Department of Energy (2006-Present), U.S. Naval Officer (Submarine Qualified) (1995-2006)
"I have taught this course and see a good fit for this book. … Its collection of diverse topics are generally not taught together. This book can be surely be used for multiple courses with some sections used in one class. … very well written, descriptive with examples covering different application domains. … This book not only fills the gap in application of power electronics in shipboard propulsion and ocean energy, but also does it in best possible way. It provides detailed examples in multiple related application domains. Writing a book covering such a diverse domain is tough, but the author has done a great job of relating those together and putting it nicely. This book provides balance between being highly technical and easily understandable."

Descriere
Derived from the author's more than 45 years of experience in industry and teaching, this book covers modern shipboard propulsion and the power electronics and ocean energy technologies that drive it—all in one volume. Divided into four parts, the text first focuses on power electronics convertors and variable-frequency drives. It then addresses the electric propulsion of ships, discussing the recently developed permanent magnet and superconducting motors, as well as hybrid propulsion. The book also explores emerging ocean power technologies and examines two aspects—energy storage and system reliability—that are essential for integrating a large-scale system.
