Song of the Lark

Autor Willa Cather
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 28 feb 2007 – vârsta de la 14 ani
The Song of the Lark is generally considered to be the second novel in Cather's Prairie Trilogy, following O Pioneers (1913) and preceding My Antonia (1918). Thea always knew she was destined for greatness. She has a fabulous voice, one that she believes will bring her out of the lowness of her situation. Though the townsfolk know that she has a great voice, it will do nothing for her future. Her voice coach Herr Munch is not at the caliber that she wishes to attain. She knows that there are better instructors in Chicago and her dream is to go there someday. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't have the money to travel there from Colorado and neither does her family. But one of her longtime friends, Dr. Archie, knows that she has always dreamed of going away and has endeavored to find a way for her to go. And when he does, she cannot refuse. Will the big city embrace her and her talent? Or will the city prove to be too fickle? Willa Cather is best remembered for such novels as My Antonia and One of Ours -- that latter winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Song of the Lark is considered semi-autobiographical and parallels Willa Cather's own journey into writing."

Notă biografică

Willa Sibert Cather (1873 - 1947) was an American writer who achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, including O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), and My Ántonia (1918). In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), a novel set during World War I. Cather grew up in Virginia and Nebraska, and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She lived and worked in Pittsburgh for ten years, supporting herself as a magazine editor and high school English teacher. At the age of 33 she moved to New York City, her primary home for the rest of her life, though she also traveled widely and spent considerable time at her summer residence on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick.

Recenzii

"This authoritative edition of Cather's perhaps least understood novel is a welcome addition to the Willa Cather Scholarly Edition, begun under the general editorship of Susan Rosowski and now under that of Guy Reynolds. The Song of the Lark is important for taking the portraits of European immigrants in the US in O Pioneers! and adding the element of art as it traces the evolution of Thea Kronborg from small-town girl to opera singer acclaimed in Chicago, New York, and Europe. . . . Embellished with handsome photographs and presented in an easy-to-read format, this is a necessary edition for any scholar of Cather."—N. Birns, Choice
