This book is designed to help APN students and new APNs understand the process of role transition through the exploration of the Concept Analyses for APN Role Transition and Professional Identity. APN role transition from a generalist nurse to a graduate prepared Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) can be a challenging and emotional as the APN student progresses through graduate education, clinical experiences and during the first year of APN clinical practice. Precise steps that individuals can take to gain an in-depth understanding of the development of APN professional Identity through the personal process of role transition are provided.  
Role transition is complex, this book provides knowledge and skills on four levels of role transition based on the facilitators and barriers of  macro, meso, micro, and personal levels. A critical aspect of role transition is gaining a personal insight of one’s identity as person and as professional nurse. Professional identity changes significantly through the graduate education process and first year of clinical practice. This book emphasizes personal introspection and forethought to augment successful APN role transition and personal growth through a series of questions to guide personal thoughts while setting plans for the future as an APN.

Dr. Kidner is the founder and CEO of LEAP Leadership, LLC, a company that provides education and mentorship to nurses in order to strengthen their professional identity and leadership skills. She has 33 years of clinical experience as a nurse, 19 of these years as a nurse practitioner (NP). Her clinical work includes the initiation of the NP role in remote critical care access, where she launched the opening of a hospital facility’s Emergency Room (ER).  Recognizing the importance of ER and trauma training, Dr, Kidner was the first NP to take an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course in Wyoming, USA. She was soon part of the training team. She went on to a position as an NP in a cardiology specialty practice in a hospital, again the first NP in this position.
Following completion of her doctorate of nursing practice (DNP), Dr Kidner lobbied for title protection for NPs in her state. In addition, she has been an active member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) in a leadership role since 2008. As an NP leader she has worked on legislative, policy, and community education for promotion of the NP role. Dr. Kidner speaks locally, nationally and internationally on diverse nursing topics from her clinical experiences in labor and delivery, ER, cardiology in addition to her expertise on nursing leadership and empowerment. In addition to her extensive clinical experience, she has taught nursing in Guyana, Vietnam, Rwanda and the USA at Duke University.
