Targeted Sanctions: The Impacts and Effectiveness of United Nations Action

Editat de Thomas J. Biersteker, Sue E. Eckert, Marcos Tourinho
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 7 mar 2016
International sanctions have become the instrument of choice for policymakers dealing with a variety of different challenges to international peace and security. This is the first comprehensive and systematic analysis of all the targeted sanctions regimes imposed by the United Nations since the end of the Cold War. Drawing on the collaboration of more than fifty scholars and policy practitioners from across the globe (the Targeted Sanctions Consortium), the book analyzes two new databases, one qualitative and one quantitative, to assess the different purposes of UN targeted sanctions, the Security Council dynamics behind their design, the relationship of sanctions with other policy instruments, implementation challenges, diverse impacts, unintended consequences, policy effectiveness, and institutional learning within the UN. The book is organized around comparisons across cases, rather than country case studies, and introduces two analytical innovations: case episodes within country sanctions regimes and systematic differentiation among different purposes of sanctions.

Recenzii

'This book focuses on UN targeted sanctions and centers on quantitative and qualitative data sets with respect to the purposes, instruments used, implementation issues, unintended consequences, and calibration of effectiveness. The book is a compendium of sections written by various authors and eschews the usual case studies in favor of cross-sectional analyses of the various sanctions-related issues. Excellent bibliography. Highly recommended for college and university libraries.' I. Walter, Choice
'… the book should be widely read and recommended to scholars and policy-makes, since the subject matter is of the utmost importance especially in today's environment of continuing challenges that threaten international peace and security. This book should also be highly recommended to students who study international politics and the UN.' Eunsook Chung, Academic Council on the United Nations System
'The book Targeted Sanctions: The Impacts and Effectiveness of United Nations Action constitutes essential reading for scholars and policymakers interested in understanding why the United Nations (UN) imposes sanctions, the factors affecting their success, and the myriad of externalities with which they are associated … Both scholars and policymakers who work on sanctions-related issues should read this book, as there is a lot to learn from the book and potentially a whole lot more to be learned from the data set it introduces.' Bryan R. Early, H-Diplo
