Notă biografică

Jack London was born John Griffith Chaney on January 12, 1876, in San Francisco, California. After working in the Klondike, London returned home and began publishing stories. His novels, including The Call of the Wild, White Fang and Martin Eden, placed London among the most popular American authors of his time. London, who was also a journalist and an outspoken socialist, died in 1916. Melanie Reim is professor and chair of the MA in Illustration Programme at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. An award-winning illustrator with a sketchbook never far from her side, she earned her MFA in Illustration from Syracuse University. Her work includes illustrations for book publishers, advertising agencies, museums, magazines and major corporations, with Simon and Schuster, The Millbrook Press, The Sony Corporation, Coca-Cola, Newsweek, Young and Rubicam, The Wildlife Conservation Society and The American Museum of Natural History amongst her clients. Hagit Borer is a professor of linguistics at Queen Mary University, London, and also at the University of Southern California. She studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was a student of Noam Chomsky. She is now a world expert in the study of syntax, and her three-volume Structuring Sense is a standard work in the field. Originally from Israel, Hagit left to study in the USA in 1977 and became a US citizen in 1992; having become entirely disillusioned with Israeli politics as a student, she is now an activist for the rights of Arabs in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A best-seller from its first publication in 1903, The Call of the Wild tells the story of Buck, a big mongrel dog who is shipped from his comfortable life in California to Alaska, where he must adapt to the harsh life of a sled dog during the Klondike Gold Rush. The narrative recounts Buck’s brutal obedience training, his struggle to meet the demands of human masters, and his rise to the position of lead sled dog as a result of his superior physical and mental qualities. Finally, Buck is free to respond to the “call” of the wilderness. Over a hundred years after its publication, Jack London’s “dog story” retains the enduring appeal of a classic.
