The Middle English Physiologus: Early English Text Society Original Series, cartea 299

Editat de H. Wirtjes
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 1992
The Physiologus has hitherto only been published in anthologies of Middle English literature. This first separate edition is taken from the sole surviving manuscript, with apparatus, commentary, glossary, and introduction. It gives the difficult text the close attention it needs, making it accessible to the modern reader. The text used to be known as the Middle English Bestiary: as it is not technically a bestiary its title has been changed. The commentary deals with textual problems and with the Middle English poet's handling of his Latin sources. The introduction contains a full description of the manuscript; a discussion of the versification; a short history of the Physiologus and medieval bestiaries. A major section of the introduction deals with the languages and transmission of the text: although the manuscript was written in c.1300, the spelling of the text is characteristic of a slightly earlier period.

Recenzii

`This is a capable and comprehensive edition of an attractive text.'Medium Aevum
'keeps up the tradition of excellent editions of Old and Middle English texts which have been appearing from EETS in recent years ... although the volume is slim, thre scholarship is exemplary and the edition will be of great benefit to students of medieval English poetry, philology, science, and theology ... this is an edition which provides well-nigh everything which a student of Middle English literature would want'Pauline A. Thompson, University of Toronto, Notes and Queries, December 1992
'A modern scholarly edition of this important text was much overdue and Dr Wirtjes has produced an excellent edition that will long remain standard. The notes and glossary are very thorough, offering well-considered solutions to nearly all the problems presented by this text ... this whole volume is beautifully produced ... excellent edition.'John Frankis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Review of English Studies, Vol. 45, No. 180, Nov '94
