W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was a British novelist, playwright, and short story writer. In World War I he worked first in the ambulance corps and then in intelligence, and he traveled widely both during and after the war. He was the author of Of Human Bondage and The Moon and Sixpence, among many other novels and short story collections.
