ART OF THE AMERICAS

Boston is one of the nation's oldest and most historic cities, the site of key events in the American revolution, like the Boston Tea Party and the and the Battle of Bunker Hill. It's no surprise that collecting, studying and displaying art from the Americas have always been an essential part of the MFA's mission. In fact, the very first object acquired by the Museum was a nineteenth-century Amercian painting.
Paintings by native son John Singleton Copley, born in 1748, form an important part of the collection, including his early history painting, Watson and the Shark(p. 32) and numerous portraits of key figures of the Revolution, like Paul Revere (p. 29). The MFA owns an unrivaled collection of silver by Revere himself, including The Sons of Liberty Bowl(p. 30), a cherished and national treasure.
