Misfortune and rejection shadowed Eddie Brooks in his early years. His birth parents were swept away in the unruly Susquehanna River during an ice storm that paralyzed Stonington, Pennsylvania, in the winter of 1953. After a brief stay in a distant orphanage, Eddie was placed in a dysfunctional foster care arrangement with a childless couple back in Stonington, but the foster plan imploded after a neighborhood tragedy that took the life of Eddie's pal.
