Wintering
Autor Katherine Mayen Limba Engleză Hardback – 10 noi 2020
An intimate, revelatory book exploring the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a break up, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world, May's story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat, joy in the hushed beauty of winter, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical, not linear. A secular mystic, May forms a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering in of a new season.

KATALIN RUS a dat nota:
I just loved Katherine May’s beautiful literary hug. Once again, I certainly believe that some books come to us when we most need them. This is Wintering for me, a gift for myself in my own fallow period of life when I must rest and retreat. I know that we are in the middle of summer, but who said that there are no winterings in the summer? Katherine May thoughtfully shows us how to come through these times with the wisdom of knowing that, like the seasons, our winters and summers are the ebb and flow of life. As Katherine May writes:” We’re not raised to recognize wintering, or to acknowledge its inevitability. Instead, we tend to see it as a humiliation, something that should be hidden from view lest we shock the world too greatly. We put on a brave public face and grieve privately; we pretend not to see other people’s pain. We treat each wintering as an embarrassing anomaly that should be hidden or ignored. Yet we do this at a great cost. Wintering brings along some of the most profound and insightful moments of our human experience, and wisdom resides in those who have wintered.” One of my favourite part was following Katherine May’s experience in Iceland: the Gullfoss waterfall, Stokkur the geyser, meeting the tectonic plates in Pingvellir National Park. I might be an Icelandic wanderlust😊 Even though the winter season is still far, but my wintering is here, I am still enjoying these beautiful shiny summer days. Wishing you all, calm and shiny days.
