Contemporary Colleges and Universities: Adolescent Cultures, School and Society

Editat de Joseph L. DeVitis
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 22 apr 2013
Today¿s colleges and universities face countless uncharted challenges and possibilities. They are often prized as national treasures, yet, in tough economic times, they are becoming a major focus of contestation and controversy. This richly comprehensive survey takes a frank look at both polarities of the puzzles of academe. Presenting multiple perspectives on a wide array of crucial issues, the book features realistic representations of students, faculty, curriculum, administration, and the socio-cultural conditions that shape higher education. The incisive essays are written by practitioners on the front lines of the academy¿s battle to validate and sustain its core principles in a complex, rapidly evolving world. They afford valuable insights into the postsecondary scene for all who seek to nurture its development in these uncertain, troubled times. The text will appeal to students, faculty, administrators, student life professionals, and policymakers who shape human potential. In the end it will leave them with sobering thoughts about the present and future of higher education, an institution that still warrants their constant care and vigilance.

Recenzii

Joseph L. DeVitis has skillfully put together a volume of enormous importance for all of us who work in higher education. This is a 'must have' book. The highly informative chapters form a remarkably illuminating whole. You will be glad to have this work on your desk for ready reference and careful reflection. (William T. Greer, Jr., President, Virginia Wesleyan College) The essays in this volume aptly capture the ambivalence, the joy, the sorrow, the confidence, the consternation, the optimism, and the equally profound perplexities of living and working in the contemporary college and university. (Wayne J. Urban, Paul W. Bryant Professor, 2009-2010, Associate Director, Education Policy Center, Professor of Higher Education, The University of Alabama) In his preface to this extraordinary collection of essays, Joseph L. DeVitis writes that 'This book is both a celebration of colleges and universities and a challenge to readers to take a hard look at where they are going [...]' It includes a remarkable range of topics on the contemporary college and university. The volume's illustrious contributors and editor are to be commended for the wisdom and sensitivity reflected in their insightful, hopeful, splendidly written essays. (Robert H. Deluty, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, University of Maryland, Baltimore County) Written by some of the academy's most respected thinkers and leaders, this welcome book affords an authoritative overview of crucial themes in today's postsecondary landscape. The essays examine a wide range of current issues and strategies and offer critical commentary on higher education's 'new normal.' The volume also provides reflective historical context and useful policy recommendations that make it must reading for all those who care about, study, work in, and lead our colleges and universities. (Sandra Jordan, Chancellor, University of South Carolina, Aiken)
