Recenzii
While acknowledging that knowledge plays a central role, social movement studies have been slow to reflect on the ways in which it is produced and transmitted. Focusing on critical education, this precious volume helps us understand the role and challenges of an alternative pedagogy.
Mayo and Vittoria offer us a well-assembled collection of relevant works about diverse contributions to critical education from international contexts including Chile, Brazil or Tanzania or Guinea- Bissau. As today core values of modernity face challenging threats attempting to destabilise our societies, critical education actions from different corners of the world, which go at the core of these values, are extremely meaningful and timely. For those of us who endeavour to contribute to a better world with our work and actions, delving into the contributions grounded on the work of Paulo Freire or Antonio Gramsci, among others, is of especial value nowadays, while a better education for all is a pending challenge to which many of us are devoted to contributing, so as to preserve and reinforce democracies throughout the 21st century.
Education studies has its academic centre in North America. This book introduces educational thinkers from three other continents, ranging from Julius Nyerere to Ada Gobetti, Gabriela Mistral, Paulo Freire and the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Terra. If you don't yet know their splendid work, this is the book for you!
For critical scholars and educators, Mayo and Vittoria's Critical Education in International Perspective will be one of the most important texts you read. I appreciate the manner and structure that the authors use to present and explore the major global concerns of critical education. A read that is as in-depth and as informative, as it is important. It will be appreciated for its timeliness and its timelessness.
