King Edward III: The New Cambridge Shakespeare

Autor William Shakespeare Editat de Giorgio Melchiori
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 27 mar 1998
The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. King Edward III is a major addition to the Shakespearean canon, and is published here for the first time in an authoritative edition of Shakespeare's works. Its editor, Giorgio Melchiori, claims that Shakespeare is not the play's sole author but that he wrote a significant part of the text. The extent of his contribution is discussed in detail. Melchiori also explores the play's historical background and genesis both in the context of contemporary theatrical practice and in relation to Shakespeare's own early cycle of history plays. An extensive Appendix on the use of sources explains the stages in which King Edward III was composed.

Recenzii

'Here in the elegant format emblematic of this collected edition … is a play entitled King Edward III … Giorgio Melchiori's introduction to the New Cambridge Edward III, together with the actual editorial presentation and appendix on the play's sources are models of learned scruple. What this superb edition compels us to keep asking is simply this: 'how did Shakespeare become Shakespeare?' Neither the history of literature nor of language provides a richer ground for wonder.' George Steiner, The Observer
'Anyone who reads through Edward III with an open mind will, I believe, accept that the Shakespeare canon is permanently enlarged. It is an exhilarating experience.' Contemporary Review

Notă biografică

William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and two long narrative poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. At age 49 (around 1613), he appears to have retired to Stratford, where he died three years later. Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best work produced in these genres. Until about 1608, he wrote mainly tragedies, among them Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, all considered to be among the finest works in the English language.
