Market/readership/level : This text would be appropriate as required and/or supplementary reading in the following courses at the undergraduate levels: Introduction to Media; Introduction to Communications; Introduction to Media and Culture; Media and History. Survey results indicate that 22.2% of users are in "History of Mass Media" courses; 29.6% are in "Mass Media and Society courses; the rest are from a variety of introductory courses in cult/comm/media/technology & society. CMG: History of Mass Media: 479; Mass Media and Society: 1206; Survey of Mass Communication: 1500. Background : This volume did very well for us in the first edition: 3356 paperbacks since publication in November, 2002. More happily, the MAT has increased for us year on year: 765 (02) 1043 (03) and 1602 (04). The bulk of the total sales have been in the export market (1856); 500 and 1007 copies have been sold in the UK and US markets, respectively. The telemarketing survey that we conducted of users of the first edition can be accessed at: http://www.keysurvey.com/report/59306/76096/e82f. Highlights from the survey include: Enrollment information: the book is being used on courses where there are healthy enrollments (50+ students). Supplements: we posed this question in two ways in the survey. On both occasions, a healthy proportion of respondents let us know that some kind of ancillary (e.g., website, Instructor′s Manual) would be welcome. I would be interested in getting the group′s feedback about the utility/added value of a website, which the authors prefer over an IM. Ideas for a new edition: there was a good deal of consensus here. In general, respondents would like to see 1) more global/international content; 2) more updates post–9/11; 3) updates of the new media chapter; 4) illustrations (the authors are proposing to include 30); 5) and again, some kind of ancillary. Feedback on what′s so great about the 1/e: 1) clarity; 2) good historical perspective; 3) solid structure/organization; 4) user–friendliness.
