Elizabeth Farrant is Head of Chemical Technologies and Analytical Sciences at Pfizer. Previously Assistant Director, Technology development GSK, Harlow. Dr Farrant has more than10 years experience in pharmaceutical research working in combinatorial chemistry, medicinal chemistry and new technologies at the forefront of developing new approaches to synthetic chemistry including parallel chemistry and purification and flow chemistry.

It is fair to say that for the synthetic chemist working in drug discovery today, the last 15 years have seen sometimes uncomfortable levels of change in the tools and methods applied to the task of designing and synthesising new potential drug molecules. Many of the techniques developed during this time are now being used routinely in medicinal chemistry laboratories the world over to increase productivity and access new chemical space. New Synthetic Technologies in Medicinal Chemistry provides an overview of new technological developments in the synthetic chemistry of drug discovery. The chapters reflect modern thinking in terms of automation and parallel methods particularly focusing on high throughput chemistry and high throughput reaction screening, microwave-assisted, flow chemistry and emerging technologies such as template guided and knowledge-based iterative systems. The book is aimed at graduates and postgraduates with an interest in drug discovery and is intended to put recent technology advances into perspective by outlining the history and development of the area over recent years. It also provides a useful background and context for scientists already engaged in drug discovery or entering this fascinating and worthwhile profession as well as demonstrating the undoubted benefits of the judicious use of synthetic technologies in drug discovery. Each chapter is written by an expert practitioner from industry and calls upon their direct experience and practical knowledge of the area.
