Tao Te Ching

Autor Lao-Tzu Traducere de Gia-Fu Feng, Jane English
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 5 dec 2024
The Tao Te Ching, Dao De Jing, or Daodejing, whose authorship has been attributed to Laozi, is a Chinese classic text. Its name comes from the opening words of its two sections: dao "way," Chapter 1, and de "virtue/power," Chapter 38, plus jing "classic." According to tradition, it was written around the 6th century BC by the sage Laozi (or Lao Tzu, "Old Master"), a record-keeper at the Zhou Dynasty court, by whose name the text is known in China. The text's true authorship and date of composition or compilation are still debated. The text is fundamental to the Philosophical Daoism (Daojia and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism and Neo-Confucianism. This ancient book is also central in Chinese religion, not only for Religious Daoism but Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used the Daodejing as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, aided by hundreds of translations into Western languages. The Wade-Giles romanization "Tao Te Ching" dates back to early English transliterations in the late 19th century, and many people continue using it, especially for words and phrases that have become well-established in English. The pinyin romanization "Daodejing" originated in the late 20th century, and this romanization is becoming increasingly popular, having been adopted as the official system by the Chinese government.

Notă biografică

Laozi (also Lao-Tzu or Lao-Tze, Chinese: ¿¿; pinyin: L¿oz¿, lit. "Old Master") was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is known as the reputed author of the Tao Te Ching and the founder of philosophical Taoism, and as a deity in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions. Although a legendary figure, he is usually dated to around the 6th century BC and reckoned a contemporary of Confucius, but some historians contend that he actually lived during the Warring States period of the 5th or 4th century BC. A central figure in Chinese culture, Laozi is claimed by both the emperors of the Tang dynasty and modern people of the Li surname as a founder of their lineage. Laozi's work has been embraced by various anti-authoritarian movements as well as Chinese Legalism.

Recenzii

A lucid translation by one of the most famous translators of Chinese into English
Ancient wisdom for those facing twenty-first-century perplexities . . . Minford writes for ordinary people seeking guidance in everyday life . . . In simple but resonantly phrased language, he somehow does unfold theTao's message
A wonderful translation - clear and deep
Elegant and poetic, John Minford's translation of theTao Te Chingprobably comes the closest of any to the essence of the mystical, ineffable Taoist classic
John Minford's translation . . . has the mark of the craftsman: its choice of words is not just judicious but also poetic, refreshing the at once limpid and ambiguous original and making it new. The result is a metaphysical feast for those willing to slow down and read this text as it was meant to be read: meditatively
