Horster's dissertation on the building activity of the Roman emperors contains a detailed study, supported by an extensive catalogue, of inscriptions on buildings in Italy and the western Roman provinces that refer to emperors. Sections discuss types of inscriptions, inscriptions on city walls and gates, inscriptions relating to the military, governors, senators and other imperial representatives and the financing of public building. Horster also makes regional comparisons and discusses the reasons behind the imperial building programme.
