This volume contains not a history of international relations in ancient Greece, but rather a systematic presentation of the rules that governed the relations - in war as well as in peace. In addition to having a culturally homogeneous society and praying to the same gods, ancient Greeks lived according to common laws that essentially date back to archaic times. Disrespect for oaths and treaties, in particular, was a crime condemned by public opinion and punished by the gods. War was subject to rules respected by all Greeks and sanctioned by the gods, and those who would not respect them would sooner or later have to suffer the consequences. French text.
