This volume addresses the emergence of historic cultural studies from 1880 to 1932. Historic cultural studies formulated problems that became evident with the absolution of historic philosophic guarantees and are still being discussed today. The discussion was carried out by theologian Ernst Troeltsch under the headline Krise des Historismus (Crisis of Historicism). This tied in to the Krise der Wirklichkeit (Crisis of Reality) formulated by microbiologist Ludwick Fleck in 1920 as a response to contemporary views of new scientific knowledge.
