Shades of Oliver Twist and Fagin come to mind when reading this exciting story of a boy, orphaned by the Plague in the London of 1666. However, this is no copycat story but a well-written book with good historical detail. This is a well-known story but Jonathan Eyers breathes new life into the spread of the fire and ensuing panic. It would be perfect for reading aloud to children who may be studying the Great Fire in KS1. The cover is arresting...so will hopefully draw readers in and let them read a really good novel about one of the most famous events in English History.
This is a pacey, atmospheric story full of heart stopping moments. It is so vividly told, you almost feel yourself choking on the smoke as you read it.
This is an exciting action story...set amid the terrors of the Great Fire of London...The book evokes a truthful picture of that terrible event...the story is very well written, full of dialogue, intense action and it shows the best of human love as Samuel and Catherine care for the naive Gideon.
