Vanity Fair: Norilana Books Classics

Autor William Makepeace Thackeray
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 17 sep 2006
Vanity Fair: A Novel Without a Hero is an unparalleled satire of 19th Century British Society, written by William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) and originally published in serial format from 1847 to 1848. Meet the charming and cunning Becky Sharp, insinuating upward through the social ranks with the fervor of Napoleon plowing through Europe, and the subtlety of a butterfly.
More so than any other picaresque character, Becky Sharp's name has become synonymous with a gold-digging, amoral, opportunistic social charmer who is also shrewd and strong-a portrait of a complex woman of her time.
She is the anti-heroine you love to hate, and yet at the same time cannot help but secretly admire her methods.

Descriere

Essentially a commentary on hypocrisy and those ethical principles to which society pays lip-service, VANITY FAIR (1847-8) is a classic epic extending from urban and rural England to Waterloo and the continental haunts of exiles. Considered one of the greatest social-satirical novels in English, this edition includes all of the author's own illustrations.

Notă biografică

William Makepeace Thackeray (1811 - 1863) was a British novelist and author. He is known for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society. Thackeray began as a satirist and parodist, writing works that displayed a sneaking fondness for roguish upstarts such as Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair and the title characters of The Luck of Barry Lyndon and Catherine. In his earliest works, written under such pseudonyms as Charles James Yellowplush, Michael Angelo Titmarsh and George Savage Fitz-Boodle, he tended towards savagery in his attacks on high society, military prowess, the institution of marriage and hypocrisy.

Caracteristici

Part of Alma's Evergreen series, this new edition of Vanity Fair contains a carefully selected bibliography and extensive notes on the text together with extra material on the author's life and works.

Recenzii

"The only English novel which...challenges comparison with War and Peace" -- John Carey "The best thing he ever wrote - sharp, brilliant, touching, clever and cruel, with an unforgettable heroine" -- Joanna Trollope "Witty, sexy, sandy-haired Becky Sharp, whose impoverished background explains her hunger for rich men and high position. She is a rebel from the very first chapter of Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Her one final act of kindness derives from her constant virtue: seeing things as they are" -- Maggie Gee Independent "A terrific book - bold, funny, scathing and quite unpredictable" -- Al Murray "Becky Sharp may be one of literature's great schemers, but she's also one of its most memorable and entertaining. More rounded than almost all the simpering Victorian dolls who followed, she alone is worth the read" The Times
